Etymology edit

Uncertain. Martirosyan proposes a European substrate,[1] paralleling Balto-Slavic: compare Old Church Slavonic прахъ (praxŭ), Russian порох (porox), Polish proch, from Proto-Slavic *porxъ, and Latvian pārsla (flake), all from Proto-Balto-Slavic *paršas. Thus, ultimately connected to Proto-Indo-European *pers- (sprinkle).
