From Middle Persian 𐭡𐭧𐭱 (bḥš /⁠baxš⁠/), equivalent to the present stem of the verb [script needed] (bhtn' /⁠baxtan⁠/, to distribute; to allot), from Proto-Iranian *baxšáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰakšás, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂g-; see there for further information.
