PersianEdit

Etymology 1Edit

From Middle Persian lʾc (rāz, secret, mystery), from Old Persian *𐎼𐎠𐏀 (*rāza-), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *raȷ́ʰ- (secret, mystery; to abandon). Related to رستن(rastan, set free, leave, escape), and رها(rahā, free, liberated).

Cognates with Parthian 𐫡𐫀𐫉(rʾz /rāz/), and Sanskrit रहस्य (rahasya, secret, mystery, clandestine).

Also compare Old Armenian երազ (eraz), Imperial Aramaic 𐡀𐡓𐡆𐡀(ʾrzʾ, mystery), Hebrew רָז(rāz), Classical Syriac ܐܪܙܐ(ʾərāzā), Iranian borrowings.
