مان
Arabic edit
Etymology edit
From م ي ن (m-y-n).
Pronunciation edit
Verb edit
مَانَ • (māna) I, non-past يَمِينُ (yamīnu) (intransitive, poetic)
- to lie
- Synonym: كَذَبَ (kaḏaba)
- (Can we date this quote?), al-Ḥarīrī, المَقَامَة الدِمْيَاطِيَّة [al-maqāma(t) ad-dimyāṭiyya, The Damiettan Episode]:
- But the waiting dragged on, and the sun was peering through tattered gauze. "We have stretched our stay, and loafed about the journey, frittering away much time, and it turned out that the man had lied," I said, "So make ready to set out, and cleave not to greenery from dung." I then arose to load my saddle, to pack up for my journey.
