EtymologyEdit

Noun of place in the form of the passive participle of the verb اِسْتَشْفَى(istašfā, to seek a cure) from the root ش ف ي(š-f-y); literally “place for seeking a cure”, arising in the end of the 19th century at first as an euphemism, displacing the medieval مَارِسْتَان(māristān) that is now if not used historically rather a word for an insane asylum.
