From Proto-Indo-Iranian *HwaHyúš. Akin to Sanskrit वायु (vāyu) and Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬎(vaiiu).

Later influenced by and to some degree conflated with Persian هوا(havâ) (itself from Arabic هواء‎).
