Etymology

Root
ܕ ܪ ܣ (d r s)
1 term

Borrowed from Akkadian darāsu (to throw over or back (of an enemy or ruler)) and probably acquired the current meaning through semantic widening. Compare ܡܲܕܥܸܪ (madˁir), Turoyo ܗܳܦܱܟ݂ (hofäx), Classical Syriac ܐܗܦܟ, and Classical Syriac ܐܬܝܒ, all originally or primarily denoting “to return” and used also to denote “to vomit.” Also possibly related to Classical Syriac ܕܲܪܕܸܣ (to befoul with excrement).

Pronunciation

edit
  • (Standard) IPA(key): [daːreːs]

Verb
