Ultimately derived from Phoenician 𐤌𐤌 (mm, literally water) through Classical Syriac; compare Hebrew מֵם (mém), Arabic مِيم (mīm) and Ancient Greek μῦ (). Doublet of ܡܲܝ̈ܵܐ (mayyā).
