From ܡܲܠܟܵܐ (malkā, king) +‎ -ܘܬܐ (-ūṯā, the abstract noun ending); compare Arabic مَلَكُوت (malakūt), Hebrew מַלְכוּת (malkhút). The meaning in taxonomy is a Semantic loan from English kingdom.
