From Prakrit *अट्टक्कइ (aṭṭakkaï), from *𑀅𑀝𑁆𑀝- (*aṭṭa-) + -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), related to Hindi अड़ना (aṛnā, to be stubborn). Ultimately probably derived from Dravidian. Cognate with Punjabi ਅਟਕਣਾ (aṭakṇā), Gujarati અટકવું (aṭakvũ), Marathi अडकणे (aḍakṇe), Bengali আটকানো (aṭkanō).

अटकना (aṭaknā) (intransitive, Urdu spelling اٹکنا)

  1. to be stopped, to stop
    गाड़ी रास्ते में अटक गई।
    gāṛī rāste mẽ aṭak gaī.
    The car stopped working on the way.
  2. to be stuck, jammed, entangled
    Synonym: फँसना (phãsnā)
    पेड़ पर मेरी पतंग अटक गई।
    peṛ par merī pataṅg aṭak gaī.
    My kite got stuck in a tree.
  3. to falter
    बोलते-बोलते अटकनाbolte-bolte aṭaknāto falter as one is speaking
  4. to become involved, to be caught in something
    Synonyms: उलझना (ulajhnā), फँसना (phãsnā)
