Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘕𑘰𑘜𑘹 (jāṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀇 (jāi), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀬𑀸𑀢𑀺 (yāti), from Sanskrit याति (yā́ti). Cognate with Gujarati જવું (javũ), Hindi जाना (jānā).
