Etymology
editFrom Proto-Indo-Aryan *diwyás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *diwyás, from Proto-Indo-European *diwyós (“heavenly, divine”). Cognate with Ancient Greek δῖος (dîos), Latin dīus.

स आ व॑ह दे॒वता॑तिं यविष्ठ॒ शर्धो॒ यद॒द्य दि॒व्यं यजा॑सि॥- bhū́rīṇi hí tvé dadhiré ánīkā́gne devásya yájyavo jánāsaḥ.
sá ā́ vaha devátātiṃ yaviṣṭha śárdho yádadyá divyáṃ yájāsi. - Men as they worship thee the God, O Agni, have set on thee full many a brilliant, aspect.
So bring Most Youthful One, the Gods’ assembly, the Heavenly Host which thou to-day shalt honour.
