From Proto-Indo-Aryan *pláwatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pláwatay, from Proto-Indo-European *pléw-e-ti, from *plew- (to float, swim). Cognate with Avestan 𐬎𐬯𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬃𐬥𐬙𐬈 (usfrauuā̊nte), Ancient Greek πλέω (pléō, to float, sail), Old English flotian (whence English float).
