Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘤𑘺𑘭𑘜𑘹 (baisaṇe) (compare 𑘤𑘺𑘙𑘜𑘹 (baiṭhaṇe)) with the aphaeresis of /u/[1] in Maharastri Prakrit 𑀉𑀯𑀯𑀺𑀲𑀇 (uvavisaï), from Sanskrit उपविशति (upaviśati, “to sit; to approach”).[2] Compare Konkani बस्चे (basce), Gujarati બેસવું (besvũ), Hindi बैठना (baiṭhnā), Nepali बस्नु (basnu), Bengali বসা (bośa), Assamese বহা (boha).
