Etymology

edit

Originally the instrumental plural of an unattested *शन (śana, quiet, calm, soft), suggested to be either from Proto-Indo-European *ḱEn- or from the same root as Proto-Iranian *san- (to mount, ascend). In the latter case, the Iranian verb is of uncertain origin, and may be borrowed from the BMAC substrate.
