From Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂mn̥, from *steh₂- (to stand, be upright, stay) + *-mn̥ (deverbal noun-forming suffix): equivalent to स्था (sthā) +‎ -मन् (-man). Cognate to Latin stamen.
