Inherited from Prakrit 𑀨𑀼𑀧𑁆𑀨𑀼𑀲 (phupphusa), from Sanskrit फुप्फुस (phupphusa), of onomatopoeic origin, from the sound of blowing or puffing. Doublet of ફુપ્ફુસ (phupphus).
Cognate with Hindustani پھیپھڑا / फेफड़ा (phephṛā), Kachchi ફેફસો (phephso), Marathi फोपीस (phopīs), Odia ଫୁଫୁସ (phuphusa), پھیپھڑا / ਫੇਫੜਾ (phephṛā), Sinhalese පපු (papu).
