editFrom Middle Tamil பஃது (paḥtu), from Old Tamil 𑀧𑀂𑀢𑀼 (paḥtu), ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *paHtu (“ten”). Cognate with Malayalam പത്ത് (pattŭ), Kannada ಹತ್ತು (hattu), Telugu పది (padi), Tulu ಪತ್ತ್ (pattŭ).
