From Proto-Tai *katᴰ. Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩢ᩠ᨯ, Lao ກັດ (kat), Lü ᦂᧆ (k̇ad), Tai Dam ꪀꪰꪒ, Tai Nüa ᥐᥖᥴ (kát), Shan ၵတ်း (kát). Compare also Lakkia kat⁵⁵, Mon သ္ကိတ် (kit, “to bite”).
