From Pali saṃsāra (faring on; transmigration), from Sanskrit संसार (saṃsāra, idem); possibly via Angkorian Old Khmer saṅsāra. Cognate with Modern Khmer សង្សារ (sɑngsaa); Lao ສົງສານ (song sān), ᦉᦳᧂᦉᦱᧃ (ṡungṡaan).
