From Pali saṃsāra (“faring on; transmigration”), from Sanskrit संसार (saṃsāra, “idem”); possibly via Angkorian Old Khmer saṅsāra. Cognate with Modern Khmer សង្សារ (sɑngsaa); Lao ສົງສານ (song sān), Lü ᦉᦳᧂᦉᦱᧃ (ṡungṡaan).
