Probably from Old Khmer ឯង (eṅa), ឯង៑ (eṅ, self; oneself; own; personally). Cognate with Modern Khmer ឯង (ʼaeng, you; self, oneself; etc). Doublet of เอง (eeng). Compare Proto-Vietic *ʔɛːŋ; Vietnamese anh (you).
