Probably from Old Khmer eṅa, eṅ (self; oneself; own; personally), thus cognate with Modern Khmer ឯង (ʼaeng, you; self, oneself; etc), and perhaps cognate with Thai เอง (eeng) also. Compare Proto-Vietic *ʔɛːŋ; Vietnamese anh (you).
