Etymology

Inherited from Old Burmese နိယ့် (niy'), from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔnəj¹/³, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-nəj (sun; day). By synchronic analysis, a creaky-tone variant of နေ (ne, sun).
