From ဦး (u:) +‎ နှောက် (hnauk); the latter from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-nəw-k (brain). Cognate with Nuosu (o not, brain), Old Chinese (OC *nuːʔ), Jingpho nu' (brain), Drung unu (brain; mind), Japhug tɯrnoʁ, S'gaw Karen ခိၣ်နူာ် (khoh̀noọ, brain).
