From Proto-Kartvelian *q̣w(l)ep-, *q̣w(l)ip-, *q̣w(l)p- (to scratch off; to strip off; to fade). Cognate with Laz ღლეპა (ğlep̌a) and Svan ყუეფ (q̇uep).

Ačaṙean derives from Armenian: compare Middle Armenian կլեպ (klep, bark; peel; rind; husk; shelld), կլեպել (klepel, to peel), Old Armenian կեղեւ (kełew, bark; peel; rind; husk; shell)
