Etymology edit

From Proto-Mon-Khmer *luŋh ~ *luuŋ(h) ~ *ləŋh (to hollow, excavate, bore). Compare Vietnamese trũng (concave).

Putative cognates are found in Sino-Tibetan languages, mainly in Burmese လှိုင်း (hluing:, uneven surface) and Mizo lawng (to take out the heart of a wild plantain tree).
