From Old Japanese. First attested in the Kojiki of 712 CE with the phonetic man'yōgana spelling of 須蘇 ⟨suso1.[1] In turn, from Proto-Japonic *suso. Cognate with Okinawan (susu).

Ultimate derivation unclear.
