Wasei kango (和製漢語), orthographically borrowed from Japanese (あん)(ぜん)(だい)(いち) (anzen daīchi); itself a calque of English safety first; attested since at least 1930.

    Etymology edit

    Phrase composed of 安全 (anzen, safety) +‎ 第一 (daiichi, first). Calque of English safety first.[1]

    First attested in 1920 in the 秘密辞典 (Himitsu Jiten, Secret Dictionary).[1] Considering the publication, the term would have been in use before then.
