Glyph origin edit

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *ɡrɯds, *kɯds, *krɯd) : phonetic (OC *kɯds) + semantic (sunrise).

Etymology edit

Maybe exopassive of () (Baxter 1992, apud Schuessler 2007). Schuessler considers relation to (, “to reach to”) and (, “already”) less likely as the Middle Chinese vowels do not agree.

Related to ().

Pronunciation edit

Note: kái - only used in 暨南大學.
