Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *roːŋ, *roŋs): semantic (moon) + phonetic (OC *b·roŋ, *mroːŋ).

Unlike most other characters with a (yuè)-like component on the left, this character's (yuè) is not the cursive form of ; 朦朧朦胧 (ménglóng) was originally used in reference to the moon.
