Probably from Middle Chinese compound 證明書证明书 (t͡ɕiᴇŋH mˠiæŋ ɕɨʌ, literally to prove, to verify + clear + letter, document). Compare modern Mandarin 證明書证明书 (zhèngmíngshū) reading zhèngmíngshū.
