Compound of (ren, connect) and (shō, voice). The shō changes to as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

  1. (linguistics) a morphological change of an initial syllable of the second kanji under the influence of the historical coda of the first kanji in a word, such as 天皇, whose pronunciation is not ten’ō but tennō.
