Etymology

edit

The first syllable (yún) (pronounced wan4 in Cantonese) is possibly cognate with Zhuang vunz (person) (Shao, 2015). There are many toponyms in Guangdong with (yún) as their first character.

On the other hand, the second syllable () is possibly cognate with Zhuang faexbaeuz (Pleioblastus amarus, a plant commonly found in the area, known as 苦竹 in Chinese) (Shao, 2015), so 雲浮云浮 (Yúnfú) may mean "the people who plant Pleioblastus amarus", making the toponym possibly phono-semantic matching of Kra-Dai substrate words.
