북극(北極) (Bukgeuk, “North Pole”) + 곰 (gom, “bear”). Compare Chinese 北極熊/北极熊 (běijíxióng), Japanese 北極熊 (hokkyokuguma), Vietnamese gấu Bắc Cực, all of which literally mean “Arctic bear”.
