First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 틀이다〮 (Yale: thùlGìtá). From 틀— (teul-, “to turn, twist, wrench”) + (i-, passive suffix) + (da, verb ending).
