Verb edit

허다 (heoda)

  1. Proscribed form of ᄒᆞ다 (hawda, to do, say, make, render, treat)

Adjective edit

허다 (heoda)

  1. Proscribed form of ᄒᆞ다 (hawda, to want, be desirous of)

Usage notes edit

Per the standard Jeju orthography, the jamo (aw) should be written whenever it is traditionally pronounced.[1] However with younger speakers, this vowel has largely merged with (o) in initial syllables,[2][3] leading to differences in the orthography. The orthography 허다 (heoda) is thus likely partially due to contact with Southern Korean dialects that use 허다 (heoda) and the fact that the infinitive of ᄒᆞ다 (hawda) is / (hen / heng). This change is also caused by the lack of technological capabilities when typing (aw).[4]
