  1. (finance, numbers) negation: Creates negative values in financial documents, by circumflexing a numeric value in Arabic numerals with round brackets. In these documents, the undecorated numeric value represents a positive value or an absolute value, while the parenthesized numeric value represents a negative value (a value in the red).
    ie. (12,569.46) is a value equal to −12,569.46 [negative twelve-thousand five-hundred and sixty-nine point forty-six]
