EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Germanic *-iþō. Cognate to Gothic -𐌹𐌸𐌰 ‎(-iþa), -𐌹𐌳𐌰 ‎(-ida) as in 𐌼𐌹𐌻𐌳𐌹𐌸𐌰 ‎(mildiþa) and 𐌰𐌿𐌸𐌹𐌳𐌰 ‎(auþida). Cognate to Dutch -de as in liefde, vreugde. Descendant of -ida is German -de in Freude, Gemeinde. In modern German, this suffix is not productive anymore.
