From Pre-Germanic *ápōkʷos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂époh₃kʷos, with alteration based on adjectives in *-ugaz. Cognate with Sanskrit अपाञ्च् (ápāñc, located backwards, behind), Serbo-Croatian ȍpāk (wicked, evil).
