Etymology edit

Uncertain: possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰér-mō ~ *bʰr̥-mnés,^[1]^[2] from *bʰer- (“to boil”) (compare with Latin fermentum (“fermentation; yeast”)), or perhaps from *gʷʰér-mō ~ *gʷʰr̥-mnés,^[3] from *gʷʰer- (“warm, hot”).
