From Proto-Indo-European *poḱsom (“hair”, literally “that which is combed, shorn, or plucked”), from Proto-Indo-European *peḱ- (“to comb, shear, pluck”). Cognate with Sanskrit पक्ष्मन् (pákṣman, “eyelash, hair, filament”).
