From Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂s (big, great) +‎ *-ilaz. The suffix may have been added due to analogy with *lītilaz/*lūtilaz (little), but it also might be old: compare Proto-Celtic *maglos and Ancient Greek μεγᾰ́λος (megálos).
