From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptēiw-, *(s)ptyēw- (to spit, vomit). Cognate with Latin spuō (spit, verb), Ancient Greek πτύω (ptúō, spit, vomit), Old Armenian թուք (tʻukʻ), Old Church Slavonic пльвати (plĭvati), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति (ṣṭhīvati).
