    The Agon
    Two things were especially important to the Greeks. The spoken word in rivalry to arrive at consensus was a basis of city-state democracy. Rivalry between states was also ritualized in the athletic festivals held at Olympia. From the word agon — “contest” — came antagonism — “opposed in contest”.
