There is often quite a straightforward demand on girls to cut out their laughter from boys. Boys really dislike the silliness of girls in early puberty (Ericsson, Lundby and Rudberg, 1986). This can be seen in Norwegian slang where young teenage girls are disparagingly called “fjortiser” (fourteenies) by boys – a name that older girls often accept as a valid characterization of their own earlier childishness.
