English edit

Etymology edit

From East Timor +‎ -ese.

Pronunciation edit

  • (UK) IPA(key): /ˈiːst tɪ.məɹ.iːz/
  • (file)

Noun edit

East Timorese (plural East Timorese)

  1. A person from East Timor or of East Timorese descent.
    • 1997, Heike Krieger, Dietrich Rauschning, East Timor and the International Community: Basic Documents, Cambridge University Press, →ISBN, page 216:
According to press reports, on 1 January 1995, an ethnic riot took place at Baucau following an alleged killing of an East Timorese by an Indonesian immigrant. Some 200 youths reportedly burned a market, shops and houses []

Usage notes edit

  • As with other terms for people formed with -ese, the countable singular noun in reference to a person (as in "I am an East Timorese", "writing about East Timorese cuisine as an East Timorese") is uncommon and often taken as incorrect. In its place, the adjective is used, by itself (as in "I am East Timorese") or with a word like person, man, or woman ("writing about East Timorese cuisine as an East Timorese person").
