Etymology

From Middle High German erne f (alongside arn m), from Old High German arn f, from Proto-Germanic *azaniz f. Cognate with Middle Dutch arn, Middle Low German erne, arne, Old English *ern (in rugern). The modern form with an alveolar plosive (first attested in Middle High German ernde f) stems from merger with related Old High German arnōt m, from Proto-Germanic *azanōdaz.
