Title
English: Gravestone of Pollis.
Description
English: A funerary stele or gravestone of a hoplite (foot soldier), which was originally painted. The inscription at the top of the stele contains letters from the alphabets of both Athens and Corinth, which was typical of Megara, a city-state between the two. It reads: "I speak, I, Pollis dear son of Asopichos, not having died a coward, with the wounds of the tattooers, yes myself". The "tattooers" referred to were probably the Thracians, who lived north of Greece.
