From Middle High German gebac, from Old High German *gibak, *gibah, from Proto-West Germanic *gabak (“something baked, pastry”), collective form of *bak, from Proto-Germanic *baką (“baked goods, baking”). Cognate with Middle Low German gebak (whence German Low German Gebäck), Dutch gebak, Old English ġebæc. More at English batch.
