From Middle Persian *Gundēšāpūr, from 𐭥𐭧𐭩𐭠𐭭𐭣𐭩𐭥𐭪𐭱𐭧𐭯𐭥𐭧𐭥𐭩 (why-ʾndywk-šhpwhry /⁠Weh-Andiyōk-Šābuhr⁠/), compound of 𐭥𐭧𐭩 (weh, better) + 𐭠𐭭𐭣𐭩𐭥𐭪𐭱 (Andiyōk, Antioch) + 𐭱𐭧𐭯𐭥𐭧𐭥𐭩 (Šābuhr, Shapur).
