Etymology
editDirectly, from Ottoman Turkish قره دكز (Kara Deñiz). Perhaps going back to Proto-Turkic *kara teŋiŕ (literally “north sea; black sea”) (compare Chuvash Хура тинӗс (Hura t̬inĕs)) or earlier (compare Mongolian Хар тэнгис (Xar tengis)), equivalent to kara (“black; north”) + deniz (“sea”).
